Did you know the average American home contains over 300,000 items? I read that somewhere and honestly, it made me wanna cry. Because I was pretty sure my apartment alone was responsible for at least half of that number!
That’s exactly why I decided to tackle a 30 day declutter challenge last spring. And lemme tell you, it was harder than I expected but so worth it. If you’re drowning in stuff like I was, stick around because I’m gonna share everything I learned.
What Exactly Is a 30 Day Declutter Challenge?
So basically, it’s a structured approach to minimalism where you commit to removing clutter from your home over the course of a month. There’s different versions out there, but the most popular one is the Minimalist Game created by The Minimalists. On day one, you get rid of one item. Day two, two items. You see where this is going, right?
By day thirty, you’re saying goodbye to thirty things! That’s 465 items total if you make it all the way through. I’ll be honest, I didn’t think I could do it at first.
Why I Started This Whole Thing

I was so frustrated with my living space. Every drawer was stuffed, closets were bursting, and I couldn’t find anything when I needed it. The tipping point came when I bought new batteries only to discover I already had like fifteen packs hidden in various spots around the house.
Something had to change. My mental clutter was directly connected to my physical clutter, and I was over it. Starting a home organization project felt overwhelming though, so a day-by-day approach seemed manageable.
Week One: The Honeymoon Phase
The first week was actually kinda fun! Days one through seven meant I was only getting rid of 28 items total. Easy peasy. I started with obvious junk like expired coupons, pens that didn’t work, and those random chargers for devices I don’t even own anymore.
My advice? Start with your junk drawer. Everyone’s got one, and it’s usually packed with stuff that can go straight to the trash.
Week Two: Reality Sets In
Okay, things got real around day ten. Finding ten items to declutter every single day requires some actual effort! This is when I had to start making harder decisions about clothes I hadn’t worn in years and books I was never gonna read again.
The KonMari method helped here. If it didn’t spark joy, it had to go. Some items got donated to local thrift stores, which made parting with them easier.
Weeks Three and Four: The Real Challenge
By week three, I was seriously questioning my life choices. Finding fifteen to thirty items daily was tough! But here’s what I discovered, we hold onto so much stuff for weird emotional reasons. Like I had been keeping a broken toaster because it was from my first apartment. Why though?
I had to get creative too. Kitchen gadgets I never used, duplicate items, old makeup, craft supplies from hobbies I’d abandoned. It was all fair game during this phase of the simplify your life journey.

You don’t have to follow the challenge exactly either. Maybe you do ten items a day for thirty days instead. The point is starting somewhere and sticking with it. Just remember to dispose of items responsibly, donating what you can and recycling when possible.
